Operational Modes

ONLINE MODE: Full Symbiosis
  • Shared Compute: Heavy tasks transparently offloaded to Chasm XOS cloud
  • Live Streaming: Symbiote acts as thin terminal rendering cloud state
  • Continuous Mirroring: Every action live-synced to maintain perfect state
  • Performance: Cloud resources augment local compute
OFFLINE MODE: Autonomous Execution
  • Local Fallback: Seamless switch to local CPU/RAM execution
  • Delta Queuing: All changes stored in cryptographically signed event log
  • Auto-Reconciliation: Git-like merge on reconnection
  • Full Capability: Quibicle + Q-Tools work with full functionality

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Conflict Resolution

Challenge: User edits file offline while cloud job modifies same file → conflicts on reconnection
Solution: CRDT (Conflict-free Replicated Data Types) algorithms like Yjs or Automerge. Automatically merge changes without data corruption.

Deterministic Execution

Challenge: Code executes differently on Symbiote vs Chasm XOS → can't trust sync
Solution: WebAssembly sandbox or micro-VM guarantees identical behavior. Same input = same output on all platforms.

Security Boundary

Challenge: Malicious offline command could corrupt local state and propagate to cloud
Solution: eBPF/Wasm sandboxing restricts what offline commands can execute. Integrity verified before cloud sync.
